Orcas in the wild often really don’t come into physical contact with humans (aside from those that strand, but that is a different situation). Orcas in captivity are exposed to human contact on a daily basis, and the statement that they absolutely need human contact to keep mentally stimulated is a load of crap. Their wild counterparts pretty much live without it with no problems. The reason it’s supposedly needed in captivity, for the basis of mental stimulation, is that there is nothing for them to do in a tank. If these captives are going to feel deprived without human contact then captivity has ruined them. It is because of prolonged exposure human contact that some captives love it, whereas others like it, but then decide they’ve had enough and want to be left alone for a while.
If not getting into the tank with orcas will hurt them, then what about the captives who are currently being denied waterworks? Can we argue that the reason Tilikum has killed because he was denied having people in his tank? That a lack of waterworks made him insane? What about whales like Orkid and Kasatka, who don’t have trainers in the water with them now? If it’s supposed to be good for them why not let trainers back in with them?
People who want to see trainers back in the water must not care for their safety. Then again, there are trainers just as selfish as the pro-caps, because they want nothing more than to swim with orcas, something they’ve dreamed of doing since they were young. Even the risk of drowning, or worse, won’t faze them. And if SeaWorld isn’t allowed to have waterworks, then all those poor future Shamu trainers are going to be SOL in their dreams of wanting to ride around on an orca’s back.
If and when waterworks will be brought back, the next person that gets injured or killed by an orca in captivity, I won’t be shedding any tears for them.
